About your bird guide, Melissa Hafting :
Melissa is a birder from Vancouver, British Columbia where she serves as the eBird reviewer over five regions and runs the BC Rare Bird Alert. She believes in a strong sense of community and her passion is bringing people together through birding. Melissa enjoys many ways of birding from twitching to visiting her local patch to photograph. She is also a dedicated conservationist and enjoys sharing her adventures, young birder trips, and conservation issues at her personal blog Dare To Bird.
Melissa founded the BC Young Birders Program in 2014. Her goal was to show young birders the birds they may not see at home and to discuss important conservation issues. She has learned so much from these young birders, they have inspired her to fight for equality for the upcoming generation. Their passion for environmental justice has inspired her even more to protect the environment and its birds.
This event is part of Vancouver Bird Week’s series of in-person bird walks for the LGBTQ+ community, women, birders of colour, Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, and youth. Due to Covid-19, this guided bird walk is capped at 6 participants and will follow social distancing guidelines. No worries if you don’t have binoculars! Sanitized binoculars will be available for use.
*Masks are required for this event.*
