A City for the Birds

This event is SOLD OUT

July 1, 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and what better way for a bird enthusiast to celebrate than to try to see 150 species within the city limits by that date? That works out to about a new species seen each day.

This was the challenge ecologist Rob Butler set for himself as part of something much bigger – to make Vancouver a bird city. Attracting birds into our cities make our lives healthier and happier. Birds are also big business – $41 billion annually in the US alone.

Rob will describe how NGOs, the City of Vancouver and Park Board teamed up to produce a Bird Strategy that led to Bird Week and to hold the largest bird conference and festival the world has ever seen. In 2018, the prestigious International Ornithological Congress and Vancouver International Bird Festival will take flight. From this once-in-a lifetime event will emerge new opportunities for Aboriginal tourism, conservation, and understanding between cultures. Birds are breaking down barriers and making our lives better.

How did Vancouver accomplish this feat and what can we learn from the experience? Join Dr. Rob Butler, Chair of the Vancouver International Bird Festival, to hear the story.
